Sage Outpatient’s speech and language pathologists are certified and trained in the most up to date and evidence based swallowing therapeutic protocols. These techniques are all inclusive, ranging from traditional swallowing therapy to an intensive exercise based program aimed at treating individuals with high motivation to improve. We also offer protocols that provide neuromuscular electrical stimulation which enhance muscular strengthening and neuroplasticity of the swallowing mechanism. On the day of evaluation, your speech language pathologist will determine which program will address your individual patient needs so that you may return to eating the foods that you love.
Techniques to accelerate recovery time include:
- Vital Stim- VitalStim Therapy is a safe and effective treatment for patients suffering with difficulty swallowing or dysphagia. Vital Stim is a non-invasive, external electrical stimulation therapy.
- Amp Care Therapy: AmpCare’s Effective Swallowing Protocol (ESP) utilizes therapeutic neuromuscular stimulation to treat dysphagia. ESP re-educates and strengthens the muscles related to laryngeal elevation to reduce risks of penetration, aspiration, and pharyngeal retention. ESP also incorporates resistive and repetitive exercises which are performed by the patient during electrical stimulation to improve neuromuscular coupling and enhance neuroplasticity of the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing.
- McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP). MDTP is a systematic exercise based therapy program for treatment of swallowing disorders or adults with dysphagia. This intensive program has been shown to improve swallowing function, even in severe swallowing disorders.
- Traditional Swallowing Therapy- Compensatory strategy training, swallowing exercises, diet modification, and positioning recommendation
